Stephen Curry’s birthplace places him in an unexpected part of LeBron James’s story. Curry was born at Akron City Hospital on March 14, 1988, while his father, Dell Curry, was playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. James had been born there on December 30, 1984. The institution now known as Summa Health’s Akron Campus therefore connects two basketball careers whose best-known professional chapters unfolded on opposite sides of the country.
Curry’s upbringing followed a different geographical path. USA Basketball identifies his hometown as Charlotte, North Carolina, his school as Charlotte Christian and his college as Davidson. Golden State selected him seventh in the 2009 draft. Being born in Akron did not mean that he and James had grown up together or followed the same local basketball route. The hospital was their common starting point, while their childhood and college connections diverged.
In 2015, Curry’s Warriors faced James’s Cavaliers for the NBA championship. Akron turned the birthplace connection into a celebration during their 2016 rematch: Goodyear offered parents of newborns at three Akron-area hospitals a set of tires, an infant car seat and an “Akron Born” outfit. The promotion linked the two stars’ beginnings to another generation of local babies. The Finals pairing continued through 2018. Golden State won in 2015, 2017 and 2018, while Cleveland’s 2016 comeback interrupted that run.
The relationship gained another chapter at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Playing alongside James for the United States, Curry helped secure gold, including a decisive burst of three-point shooting against France in the final. The two players who had represented opposing teams in four championship series were now celebrating a title together.
