Born at the Same Akron Hospital: LeBron James and Stephen Curry

By Seeker

LeBron James and Stephen Curry were born more than three years apart at the same Akron hospital. These two Locories follow their separate births at Akron City Hospital, now Summa Health’s Akron Campus, and the different paths that eventually brought them together. James became an Akron school star and Cleveland’s franchise player; Curry’s route led through Charlotte and Davidson to Golden State. They met in four consecutive NBA Finals from 2015 through 2018 and later won Olympic gold as teammates in Paris in 2024. Both birthplace pins intentionally mark the same hospital campus.

LeBron James’s Birthplace

Pop Culture Sports Sports History

LeBron James was born at Akron City Hospital on December 30, 1984. Long before he became a global basketball figure, his connection to Akron began at the hospital now known as Summa Health’s Akron Campus. His birth would later acquire an unusual sporting counterpart: Stephen Curry arrived at the same hospital on March 14, 1988. The two future rivals began their lives at one institution, more than three years apart. For James, Akron also became the place where he grew into a basketball star. He attended St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, and Cleveland selected him first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. His path from an Akron school to the nearby Cavaliers made his local origins a central part of his public identity. Curry, meanwhile, would become associated with Charlotte and Davidson College before reaching Golden State. Their hospital connection attracted fresh attention when Cleveland and Golden State met in the 2015 NBA Finals. Summa celebrated the coincidence in its own magazine that autumn. The championship matchup then returned every year through 2018. James’s Cavaliers won in 2016, recovering from a 3–1 series deficit; Curry’s Warriors won the other three meetings. By 2024, the two men were Olympic teammates. Curry nominated James to carry the United States flag at the Paris opening ceremony, and they subsequently won basketball gold together. The shared birthplace remained a small but striking link between careers that had developed separately, collided repeatedly and eventually combined on the same national team.

Stephen Curry’s Birthplace

Stephen Curry’s Birthplace

Pop Culture Sports Sports History

Stephen Curry’s birthplace places him in an unexpected part of LeBron James’s story. Curry was born at Akron City Hospital on March 14, 1988, while his father, Dell Curry, was playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. James had been born there on December 30, 1984. The institution now known as Summa Health’s Akron Campus therefore connects two basketball careers whose best-known professional chapters unfolded on opposite sides of the country. Curry’s upbringing followed a different geographical path. USA Basketball identifies his hometown as Charlotte, North Carolina, his school as Charlotte Christian and his college as Davidson. Golden State selected him seventh in the 2009 draft. Being born in Akron did not mean that he and James had grown up together or followed the same local basketball route. The hospital was their common starting point, while their childhood and college connections diverged. In 2015, Curry’s Warriors faced James’s Cavaliers for the NBA championship. Akron turned the birthplace connection into a celebration during their 2016 rematch: Goodyear offered parents of newborns at three Akron-area hospitals a set of tires, an infant car seat and an “Akron Born” outfit. The promotion linked the two stars’ beginnings to another generation of local babies. The Finals pairing continued through 2018. Golden State won in 2015, 2017 and 2018, while Cleveland’s 2016 comeback interrupted that run. The relationship gained another chapter at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Playing alongside James for the United States, Curry helped secure gold, including a decisive burst of three-point shooting against France in the final. The two players who had represented opposing teams in four championship series were now celebrating a title together.
