LeBron James was born at Akron City Hospital on December 30, 1984. Long before he became a global basketball figure, his connection to Akron began at the hospital now known as Summa Health’s Akron Campus. His birth would later acquire an unusual sporting counterpart: Stephen Curry arrived at the same hospital on March 14, 1988. The two future rivals began their lives at one institution, more than three years apart.
For James, Akron also became the place where he grew into a basketball star. He attended St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, and Cleveland selected him first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. His path from an Akron school to the nearby Cavaliers made his local origins a central part of his public identity. Curry, meanwhile, would become associated with Charlotte and Davidson College before reaching Golden State.
Their hospital connection attracted fresh attention when Cleveland and Golden State met in the 2015 NBA Finals. Summa celebrated the coincidence in its own magazine that autumn. The championship matchup then returned every year through 2018. James’s Cavaliers won in 2016, recovering from a 3–1 series deficit; Curry’s Warriors won the other three meetings.
By 2024, the two men were Olympic teammates. Curry nominated James to carry the United States flag at the Paris opening ceremony, and they subsequently won basketball gold together. The shared birthplace remained a small but striking link between careers that had developed separately, collided repeatedly and eventually combined on the same national team.
