Yard of Bricks and the Snake Pit at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway preserves a one-yard remnant of its original 3.2-mile brick racing surface at the start-finish line known as the 'Yard of Bricks.' Kissing the bricks is a long-standing driver and fan tradition after major victories, dating to the track's early years. The infield area historically called the 'Snake Pit' became infamous for raucous spectator celebrations during the Indianapolis 500; access to parts of the infield and certain Speedway areas is limited outside event times. The Speedway also contains the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which houses historic race cars and artifacts.
