Tanglewood Plantation

Tanglewood Plantation, also known as the Ellison Durant Smith House, is a historic plantation located in Lynchburg, South Carolina, built around 1850 in Greek Revival style. This two-story clapboard house was the center of a forced-labor farm primarily producing cotton, and it has connections to significant historical figures, including political activist Briahna Joy Gray and educationalist John Andrew Rice. The plantation features a grand portico, various outbuildings, and was home to U.S. Senator Ellison Durant 'Cotton Ed' Smith, known for his controversial views on race. Tanglewood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in American history and heritage.
