Polaris Building

The Polaris Building, once the tallest structure in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska, was constructed in 1952 as an apartment complex and later transformed into the Northern Lights Hotel. Its history reflects the rapid growth of Fairbanks during the Cold War era, but by the early 2000s, it fell into disrepair, culminating in a significant flood in 2001 that led to its abandonment. Despite various redevelopment attempts, the building was ultimately condemned and demolished in late 2025. Today, the site is being utilized for community activities, including a winter ice rink, while the city explores future redevelopment options.
