Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital complex and quarantine history

The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital complex, located on the south side of Ellis Island, was built and expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to inspect and treat arriving immigrants; the hospital operated for several decades and was largely abandoned after immigration processing moved. The hospital buildings and wards are documented in public records, photographs, and National Park Service histories as part of the island's medical and quarantine infrastructure. Portions of the hospital complex remain in ruin and are discussed in preservation literature and guided‑tour accounts of Ellis Island's history. The site is included in the broader historic designation of the Ellis Island immigration station.
