Johnson House Historic Site (Underground Railroad station)

The Johnson House at 6306 Germantown Avenue in Germantown served as a documented station on the Underground Railroad in the mid-19th century. Owned by the Johnson family, free Black entrepreneurs, it sheltered fugitive enslaved people and assisted their passage north. The site is preserved as the Johnson House Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Interpreters at the museum present archival evidence and family histories about its role in escape networks.
