Harvey B. Gantt Center - named for Charlotte's first African-American mayor

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is named for Harvey Gantt, who served as Charlotte's first African-American mayor from 1983 to 1987. The center is Charlotte's primary institution dedicated to African-American visual art, history, and culture and presents rotating exhibitions, public programs, and educational outreach. The Gantt Center moved into its current Levine Center for the Arts building in Uptown Charlotte in 2009.
