Hole-in-the-Rock - Papago Park solstice alignment

The Hole-in-the-Rock is a natural sandstone formation in Papago Park known for a sun alignment visible around the winter solstice when sunlight passes through a gap in its rock. Local accounts and some scholars have suggested Hohokam people used the formation as an observation or calendrical marker, a claim that appears in tourism materials and archaeological discussions. That interpretation is discussed and sometimes disputed among archaeologists, but the rock formation and its solstice sightlines are real and regularly visited by residents and tourists.
