The Octagon House (Old Octagon)

The Octagon House, built in 1799 in the Federal style, served briefly as the temporary executive mansion for President James Madison following the burning of the White House in 1814. The building later became associated with the American Institute of Architects and now operates as a house museum and event space documenting early Washington history and architecture. Its distinctive eight-sided plan and historical role make it a documented architectural landmark in the city.
