White House painted white after 1814 burning

After British troops set fire to the Executive Mansion during the War of 1812 in 1814, builders applied a lime-based whitewash during repairs that gave the building its white appearance. The whitewash and subsequent repainting during later restorations reinforced the building's distinctive look. The informal name "White House" was used for decades and was made official by presidential order in 1901.
