Spotswood Hotel

The Spotswood Hotel, a five-story luxury establishment in Richmond, Virginia, opened shortly before the Civil War in January 1861 and quickly became a significant hub for Confederate leaders, including Jefferson Davis, who used it as his residence until the White House of the Confederacy was completed. The hotel served as a meeting space for military and political discussions, and its association with the Confederacy made it a center of espionage activities. Notably, it was frequented by spies like Timothy Webster. The hotel suffered minor damage during the war but was ultimately destroyed by a fire on Christmas Day in 1870, claiming at least eight lives. Today, the site is a historical landmark reflecting Richmond's rich Civil War heritage.
