Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal opened to the public on February 2, 1913, replacing earlier stations on the site; it was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by Reed and Stem and Warren & Wetmore. The terminal is noted for its celestial ceiling mural in the Main Concourse and contains 44 platforms serving 67 tracks on two levels, making it one of the world's largest train stations by platform count. A major preservation victory in 1978 helped protect the building's landmark status and spurred stronger preservation laws in New York City.
