Removal of the elevated Central Artery (the 'Big Dig')

The elevated Central Artery (Interstate 93) that ran through downtown Boston was demolished and replaced by tunneled roadways as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (commonly called the Big Dig), with major work completed in the 1990s–2000s. The removal of the elevated highway eliminated a prominent aboveground roadway that had divided neighborhoods and created the surface-level Rose Kennedy Greenway over its former corridor. The project is widely cited as the physical disappearance of the old arterial elevated structure through downtown Boston.
