White House outbuildings and enslaved workers' quarters that no longer exist

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the President's House (today's White House) was staffed by enslaved people who lived and worked in outbuildings and service spaces that have since been removed or replaced. Archaeological investigations and documentary records have documented evidence of those service structures and the presence of enslaved workers at the site. Subsequent expansions and renovations of the White House in the 19th and 20th centuries erased the original outbuildings, so the physical quarters no longer remain. Museum exhibitions and scholarly research have published the historical and archaeological findings about these vanished structures and the people who lived and worked in them.
