Seattle Underground (Pioneer Square)

After the Great Seattle Fire of June 6, 1889, parts of Pioneer Square were rebuilt with streets raised above original grade, leaving former ground-level storefronts and passageways beneath today's sidewalks. Those sub‑street spaces are the basis for the Seattle Underground tours, which interpret 19th‑century buildings, the city's regrading, and associated local stories and alleged hauntings. The Underground's historical reality is well documented, though specific ghost stories presented on tours are folkloric and debated.
