Titahi Bay Transmitter

The Titahi Bay Transmitter, once New Zealand's second tallest structure at 220 meters, is a significant AM radio transmission site located in Titahi Bay. It now features a single 137-meter mast after the demolition of its taller counterpart in 2016 due to safety concerns. The transmitter broadcasts several radio programs across multiple frequencies, with signals reaching as far as Norfolk Island and Dunedin under optimal conditions. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Kapiti coast from the top of the tower, which has undergone extensive refurbishments, including the addition of LED warning lights. The surrounding area, part of Whitirea Park, is managed by the Department of Conservation and includes recreational spaces like the Titahi Golf Club. The site has a rich history, including its previous use for shortwave broadcasts and its connection to military technology from World War II.
