American Elm allée (The Mall) in Central Park

The Mall in Central Park is a straight promenade famously lined by an allée of American elm trees (Ulmus americana) planted in the 19th century as part of the park's original design. This stand of elms is one of the most recognized surviving urban elm plantings in the United States, notable because Dutch elm disease devastated many American elm populations elsewhere. The trees on the Mall have been subject to long-term management and preservation efforts documented by the Central Park Conservancy and other sources.
