The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Roman Catholic church in North America; construction began in the 1920s and major work was completed in the mid-20th century. The basilica is a national shrine of the Catholic Church in the United States and contains extensive mosaics and numerous chapels representing diverse Catholic traditions. It is a frequent site of major liturgical events and pilgrimages in Washington, D.C.
