Coit Tower New Deal-era murals

The fresco murals inside Coit Tower were painted in 1934–1935 as part of New Deal-era art programs (Public Works of Art Project and Federal Art Project). The murals depict scenes of California life, industry, and labor, and several panels prompted controversy and federal attention at the time for perceived leftist or pro-labor imagery. Coit Tower's murals are among San Francisco’s most-cited examples of 1930s public mural art and are viewable by visitors inside the tower.
