Pohjola Insurance Building

The Pohjola Insurance building, located at Aleksanterinkatu 44 and Mikonkatu 3 in central Helsinki, is a stunning example of Finnish national romantic architecture, designed by the renowned firm Gesellius, Lindgren & Saarinen and completed between 1899 and 1901. Originally serving as the headquarters for the Pohjola Insurance Company, the building features striking façades made of rough-hewn soapstone and red granite, adorned with intricate sculptures inspired by Finnish folklore, including figures from the Kalevala. Its unique architectural elements, such as a corner tower topped with a pinecone-shaped roof, reflect both national pride and influences from contemporary American architecture. The interior boasts rustic motifs, ornate chandeliers, and a grand circular staircase, making it a fascinating site for tourists and researchers alike. Today, the building houses commercial spaces, including the long-standing tobacconist Havanna-Aitta, while also serving as a venue for banquets, blending historical significance with modern use.
