Fort Mason Center (adaptive reuse of U.S. Army port facilities)

Fort Mason Center occupies a former U.S. Army post and port facility at the northern waterfront; many of its masonry warehouses and piers date to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site served as a primary Pacific Coast Army embarkation point for troops and materiel during World War II and contains historic Quonset huts, piers, and warehouse buildings associated with military logistics. Since the late 20th century the fort's historic buildings have been adaptively reused as cultural, educational, and nonprofit spaces as part of preserving the site's maritime and military architectural heritage. Portions of Fort Mason are listed and interpreted as historic resources within the city's waterfront preservation programs.
