South Side Community Art Center

The South Side Community Art Center, established in 1940 in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, is the first black art museum in the United States not linked to a historically Black college. It emerged from the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project and has played a crucial role in nurturing African American artists. The center, housed in a historic 1893 mansion, was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1994 and recognized as a 'National Treasure' in 2017. It offers free art classes and has a rich history of community involvement, making it a significant cultural hub for both tourists and researchers interested in African American art and history.
