Gowanus Batcave

The Gowanus Batcave, officially known as the Central Power Station of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, is a historic power station located in Gowanus, Brooklyn, New York City. Built between 1901 and 1904, it played a crucial role in powering the city's transit system until its closure in 1972. After years of abandonment and becoming a hub for squatters and graffiti artists, the site was purchased in 2012 by philanthropist Joshua Rechnitz, who transformed it into Powerhouse Arts, an arts space dedicated to creative fabrication. In 2019, it was designated a city landmark, preserving its unique architectural blend of Romanesque Revival and classical styles.
