National Building Museum (Pension Building)

Originally constructed as the Pension Building for the U.S. Pension Bureau and completed in 1887, the building was designed by Army Quartermaster Montgomery C. Meigs and is an important example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Its interior includes a vast Great Hall used for public exhibits and events. The exterior is notable for a terracotta frieze by sculptor Caspar Buberl depicting Civil War soldiers, workers, and allegorical figures. The structure now houses the National Building Museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
