1878 Yellow Fever epidemic burials at Elmwood Cemetery

The 1878 yellow fever epidemic killed an estimated 4,800–5,000 residents of Memphis, producing a large number of burials in the city's cemeteries. Elmwood Cemetery contains graves and monuments for many victims from that epidemic and is a documented burial site for individuals who died during the outbreak. The epidemic's toll contributed to Memphis losing its city charter and prompted major public health and sanitation reforms.
