Tower Building (New York City)

The Tower Building, located at 50 Broadway in Manhattan's Financial District, was a pioneering skyscraper completed in 1889, notable for being one of the first buildings to utilize a steel skeleton structure. Designed by architect Bradford Gilbert, its innovative design allowed it to rise 128 feet with just 21.5 feet of frontage on Broadway, making it a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The building's unique construction method, inspired by a railroad bridge, set the stage for future skyscrapers in New York City. Despite its historical significance, the Tower Building was vacated in 1913 and demolished the following year, making way for taller structures like the Woolworth Building. Today, it stands as a testament to the evolution of architectural design in the late 19th century.
