Barton Academy

Barton Academy, located in Mobile, Alabama, is a historic Greek Revival school building recognized as the first public school in Alabama. Constructed between 1836 and 1839, it features a striking design with a hexastyle Ionic portico and a domed cupola. Named after state legislator Willoughby Barton, the academy has a rich history, serving various educational purposes over the years, including a high school until 1926. After years of neglect, significant restoration efforts began in 2020, culminating in its reopening in 2021. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a notable example of early public education architecture in the region.
