Austin Hall (Harvard University)

Austin Hall is a historic classroom building at Harvard Law School, designed by renowned architect H. H. Richardson. Constructed between 1882 and 1884 in Romanesque Revival style, it was the first building specifically built for an American law school and serves as a significant architectural landmark on the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The building features a striking T-shaped layout with polychrome sandstone facades and a notable entryway framed by Romanesque arches. Inside, it houses large classrooms designed for the innovative Socratic method curriculum and the Ames Courtroom, where moot court sessions are held, often presided over by a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Austin Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a must-visit site for tourists and researchers interested in legal education and historic architecture.
