Fort Independence on Castle Island

Fort Independence is a granite coastal fort located on Castle Island in South Boston; the present structure dates to the early-to-mid 19th century and replaces earlier colonial and Revolutionary War-era fortifications on the site. The fort is part of a public park but the interior and guided tours are offered on a limited, seasonal schedule, so access to the fort’s interior features and exhibits can be difficult to arrange spontaneously. The site’s location on a peninsular park and its limited public hours contribute to its reputation as a less-immediately-visible historic site in Boston.
