Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress

The Thomas Jefferson Building, located at 101 Independence Avenue SE, opened in 1897 and is the oldest of the Library of Congress buildings. Known for its Beaux-Arts architecture, the building houses the ornate Main Reading Room and a richly decorated Great Hall with historic murals and sculptures. Congress officially renamed it the Thomas Jefferson Building in 1980 in honor of Jefferson's role in establishing the Library.
