Spirit of Detroit sculpture

The Spirit of Detroit is a large bronze sculpture by Marshall Fredericks mounted on the exterior of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Dedicated in 1958, the figure has become an enduring civic symbol often used in public celebrations and gatherings. Citizens commonly drape sports jerseys and banners on the statue during major team championships. The work is one of Detroit’s most photographed public artworks.
