Newstead House, Brisbane

Newstead House, Brisbane's oldest surviving residence, is a historic mansion located on the banks of the Brisbane River. Built in 1846 in the Colonial-Georgian style, it showcases a late Victorian interior. Originally constructed for Scottish settler Patrick Leslie, it has a rich history involving various notable residents, including Captain John Wickham and a prominent Jewish businessman, Lewis Flegeltaub. The house served multiple purposes over the years, including a museum and a residence for American troops during World War II. Today, it operates as a museum open to the public, surrounded by Newstead Park, which features historical monuments and recreational spaces, making it a significant cultural site for both tourists and researchers.
