Tunghsing Building

The Tunghsing Building, located in Taipei's Songshan District, is notable for its tragic history and subsequent reconstruction. The original 12-story structure, completed in 1984, was destroyed in the 1999 Jiji earthquake, resulting in the loss of 87 lives and making it the only building in Taipei to collapse entirely during the disaster. The building housed a mix of residential, banking, and hotel facilities, and its collapse led to significant legal battles over construction negligence. A new building was constructed on the same site and opened in 2009, symbolizing resilience and recovery for the community, with many displaced residents returning to their homes.
