Bunker Hill Monument - early 19th-century granite obelisk

The Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown was constructed from 1825 to 1843 as a 221-foot granite obelisk commemorating the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill. The monument was built using locally quarried granite and includes an interior stone staircase of 294 steps to the observation chamber. It stands on Monument Square and has long served as both a memorial and a prominent piece of 19th-century commemorative infrastructure in Boston Harbor. The site is administered as part of the Boston National Historical Park.
