Salk Institute ocean-framed courtyard

The Salk Institute's central courtyard contains a long reflecting channel that visually frames the Pacific Ocean between two concrete research blocks, creating an intentional architectural viewpoint. Designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1965, the courtyard is widely photographed for its symmetrical composition and ocean sightline. Public visitation is allowed during posted hours and by tour, which keeps this dramatic, ocean-facing vantage relatively controlled and less crowded than nearby coastal overlooks.
