McLellan House

The McLellan House, located at 140 School Street in Gorham, Maine, is a historic brick house built in 1773, making it the oldest known brick house in Cumberland County and possibly the entire state. Now part of the University of Southern Maine campus, it houses the Center for Education Policy, Applied Research, and Evaluation. The house features a distinctive 2+1⁄2-story design with a granite foundation and a mix of architectural styles, including Flemish bond brickwork. Originally built for early settlers Hugh and Elizabeth McLellan, the house has undergone various adaptations over the years, including its conversion into a dormitory and later office space. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in Maine's colonial history.
