Hueco Tanks archaeological rock shelters

Hueco Tanks State Historic Site contains hundreds of prehistoric pictograph panels and rock shelters. Archaeological investigations at Hueco Tanks have documented buried cultural deposits, stone tools, and bedrock mortars indicating human use of the site for thousands of years. The site's natural basins (huecos) helped preserve stratified deposits and organic materials that researchers have excavated to study long-term habitation and ritual activity. Hueco Tanks is managed as a state historic site and public recreational area.
