Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial - first Mall memorial to an African American and non-president

Dedicated in 2011, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall is the first major memorial on the Mall dedicated to an African American and to an individual who was not a U.S. president. The memorial features a prominent stone sculpture and a plaza with inscriptions of Dr. King’s writings. The site is managed by the National Park Service and interprets King’s life, leadership in the civil rights movement, and his national significance.
