Renaissance Center (modernist riverfront complex)

The Renaissance Center (RenCen) is a group of seven interconnected skyscrapers on Detroit's riverfront designed by architect John Portman and constructed beginning in 1977. The central tower rises 73 stories and is the tallest building in Michigan. General Motors purchased the complex in 1996 and established its world headquarters there, making the RenCen a focal point of the city's waterfront redevelopment. The complex is a prominent example of late-20th-century modernist mixed-use architecture in Detroit.
