One Liberty Place - first skyscraper to exceed William Penn statue height

One Liberty Place, completed in 1987 and designed by Helmut Jahn, was the first Philadelphia skyscraper to rise higher than the statue of William Penn atop City Hall, ending the city's informal gentlemen’s agreement that no building should surpass the height of the Penn statue. Its completion marked a major change in the city's skyline and triggered a new era of tall‑building construction in Center City. The tower has 61 floors and has been a prominent corporate and office address since its opening.
