Charles River Dam (at the Museum of Science)

The Charles River Dam, completed in 1910 just upstream of the Museum of Science, created the Charles River Basin and largely converted the tidal river upstream into a non-tidal freshwater basin. The structure includes gates and a lock system used to control tides and maintain water levels for navigation and recreation. The dam and basin significantly altered Boston's waterfront and remain key pieces of the city's water-control infrastructure.
