First public demonstration of surgical anesthesia (Ether Dome)

On October 16, 1846, surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital performed the first widely reported public demonstration of surgical anesthesia using ether in the operating theater now called the Ether Dome. The demonstration marked a turning point in surgical practice and is documented in contemporary accounts and hospital records. The Ether Dome remains preserved as a historic site within the hospital.
