Col. Monroe M. Shipe House

The Col. Monroe M. Shipe House, located in the historic Hyde Park district of Austin, Texas, is a fascinating two-story residence completed in 1892 by Monroe M. Shipe, the founder of Hyde Park. This unique home showcases an eclectic architectural style that blends Stick style forms with Queen Anne decorations and features a distinctive flat concrete roof. Shipe not only built the house but also planned the surrounding neighborhood, naming a nearby subdivision 'Shadowlawn.' During renovations, it was revealed that the house was constructed using lumber from the grandstands of the State Fair of Texas, adding to its historical significance. The house, situated at 3816 Avenue G, was recognized for its historical importance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a noteworthy site for tourists and researchers alike.
