University of Texas Tower (Main Building)

The Main Building and its tower at the University of Texas at Austin were completed in 1937 and designed by architect Paul Cret. The tower rises to approximately 307 feet and houses university administrative offices and a carillon. On August 1, 1966, the tower was the site of a mass shooting by Charles Whitman, an event that had a lasting impact on campus safety and police response practices. The Tower remains an iconic symbol of the university and is open to visitors during limited hours.
