People's Temple San Francisco headquarters and the Jonestown tragedy

The People's Temple maintained a San Francisco headquarters that operated out of a building on Geary Boulevard where Jim Jones and the organization carried out political and social activities in the 1970s. After the November 18, 1978 mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, officials and journalists traced many survivors, activities, and organizational records back to the Temple's San Francisco offices. The city location became central to investigations into the Temple's operations and fundraising in the years following the Jonestown deaths.
