Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern - subterranean column forest

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a decommissioned 1926 drinking-water reservoir that was converted into a public art and event space and opened for tours in 2016. The cistern contains 221 concrete columns on an 87,500-square-foot slab ceiling, creating a low, subterranean interior that provides a unique, framed visual perspective unlike typical Houston viewpoints. Artists have used the reflective floor and lighting to stage installations that further emphasize the cistern’s interior geometry. Guided visits are organized at the site to view the space and its installations.
