Mark Hopkins Hotel (Nob Hill landmark)

The Mark Hopkins Hotel opened in 1926 on Nob Hill on the site of one of the original 'Big Four' railroad magnates' mansions that were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. The hotel is a notable example of early 20th-century urban hotel architecture in San Francisco and is architecturally distinguished by its grand public spaces and prominent rooftop lounge, the 'Top of the Mark.' Over its history the building has been associated with civic events, social functions, and continuity of downtown hotel design in the city.
