Missouri Lumber and Mining Company

The Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (MLM), established in the 1880s, was a significant timber corporation in southeast Missouri, primarily operating from the company town of Grandin. Founded by Pennsylvania lumbermen, MLM capitalized on the abundant timber resources of the Missouri Ozarks to support the U.S. westward expansion. At its peak, Grandin housed up to 3,000 residents and boasted the largest lumber mill in the nation. The company played a crucial role in the local economy and technological advancement, leading to the establishment of a well-planned town with essential amenities. Although the timber resources were depleted by 1910, many of Grandin's historic buildings remain, recognized for their cultural significance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
